John Garland Brooks

Garland Brooks went to his eternal rest on February 28, 2020. He was born on December 3, 1926, near Calumet, Oklahoma to Allean Beverly Barker and Charles Frank Brooks and lived his entire life in Canadian County. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served from 1944 to 1946, a WWII Veteran, after graduating from El Reno High School. His yearbook picture noted that he was known for his `smiling eyes’. After the Navy, Garland started his own farming business. He fell in love with and married Beverly Laughlin in 1952. They raised four children and moved from the country to the town of El Reno in 1960. He supplemented his farming income working at General Mills, driving a semi truck from Chicago to Houston for various local businesses and was general manager for Penwright Grain Company in El Reno Oklahoma for many years with Beverly at his side as secretary. Garland had a passion for poker and was proud that he never dipped into family funds to finance the game. He left a thriving farm and ranch operation and worked independently until the age of 90. His love of the land, hard work, honesty and a good sense of humor will long be remembered. Garland would humorously refer to life’s little setbacks as “wrecks on 5th Avenue” and admonish family members who stayed out too late as “laying out with the dry cows”. He was affectionately known to his grandchildren as Papa and had a nickname for all the members of his family.

He is survived by brother Frank Brooks of Ft Worth, TX, sister Carolyn Gayle Overmyer of Lemoore, CA, children: Kevin Charles Brooks, Beverly Lynn Herzig `Bambi’ and husband Jim, Marshell Rae Reiswig ‘Shelly’ and husband, Ken, grandchildren: Adrienne Suzanne Garcia, John Garland Brooks III ‘Trey”, Charles Seth Brooks ‘Charley’ and wife, Brandi, Mikyla Rae Pace `Kyla’ and husband, Tim, Christopher Adam Reiswig, Jacob Brooks Herzig and wife, Madison, Rachel Lynn Herzig, Elizabeth Rose Herzig ‘Libby’, Kameron Charles Brooks, Kourtney Leigh Brooks, Nikki Buckelew and husband, Chris, Greg Gormley; great grandchildren: Paige Plumlee and Bentley Brooks, Makena, Reille, Levi and Trevor Pace, Kaleb Vincent, Haylee and Sarissa Gormley, Dakota Serhus and husband, Zac; great great grandchildren: Layla and Maverick Serhus.
