Overcoming Substantial Obstacles on her Journey

Marie Whiteman has been chosen as the Elder of the Year for the 28th annual Oklahoma Indian Nations powwow held Aug. 4-6, 2017 at the Concho Powwow grounds in Concho, Okla.

Eighty-two year old, Marie Whiteman’s start in life was a fiery one.

When Whiteman was born on Sept. 1, 1934, a fire had broke out in a pasture at her family’s farm in Watonga, Okla. Family and friends rushed to help put out the fire and someone spilled water onto the porch, Whiteman’s pregnant mother slipped, fell and instantly went into labor, giving birth to Marie Whiteman.
